HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (8-7, 1-1 SBC) opened 2025 and a four-game homestand with a 77-71 over the Texas State Bobcats (8-6, 1-1 SBC) Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center.

"It's good to get the first the Sun Belt win against a really talented Texas State team," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said. "Terrence (Johnson) does a great job. He's a two-time Coach of the Year in the Sun Belt. I'm proud of our guys. I thought we played really hard. The emphasis was keeping those guys off the glass. We beat them in rebounding 37-30. It was a really good team effort."

With a 7-for-10 shooting night from the field while making 9-of-13 from the free-throw line, Dezayne Mingo tallied a career-high 23 points to lead all scorers. The Canadian guard added five rebounds and five assists to his stat line.

Obinna Anochili-Killen followed with 19 points on an 8-for-11 night from the field with six rebounds. Jalen Speer rounded out a trio of double-figure scorers with 13 points on 50 percent shooting (4-for-8) including 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

The Herd jumped on top of the Bobcats early by scoring 19 of the first 23 points in the game. The early start included a 13-0 run from the 17:17 mark to 12:34 left in the first half. During the advantage Anochili-Killen tallied seven points, with four from Ryan Nutter and a pair from Mikal Dawson to take a 19-4 lead.

A quick 4-0 burst from Mingo gave MU its largest lead of the game at 16 points, 27-11, with 8:21 left in the opening half. Texas State cut Marshall's lead to seven, 32-25, with 1:50 left, but a Dawson triple and a Mingo jumper down the stretch gave the home side a 37-25 advantage heading into halftime.

The Herd maintained its double-digit lead on the Bobcats for the majority of the second half. Texas State made a late push scoring 10 of the final 12 points in the contest, but MU hung on for the six-point victory, 77-71.

The Green and White shot 50 percent from the field or better for the fourth time this season making 26 of its 52 shots in the contest. The Herd's defense stepped up holding the Bobcats to just 25 percent (4-for-16) from three-point range when the visitors came into the contest making 38 percent of its shots from behind the arc.
