Voyles’ 19 points not enough as Herd falls to SBC co-leaders
BOONE, N.C. – Marshall's Men's Basketball team fell on the road to Sun Belt co-leader Appalachian State, 73-58, at Holmes Convocation Center on Thursday evening.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 12-14 overall and 7-6 in Sun Belt Conference play.
"I thought we played hard and I was impressed with that," Marshall Men's Basketball coach Dan D'Antoni said. "We came here to win and our bench was better….This is a tough place to play."
Kevon Voyles led Marshall with 19 points in the loss while Jacob Conner and Kam Curfman each added 11. Conner added nine rebounds as well. Nate Martin finished just shy of another double-double, ending the game with eight rebounds and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The game was hanging in the balance with 11 minutes left after Ryan Nutter's 3-pointer cut the App State lead to 49-47. However, missed opportunities plagued the Herd down the stretch with missed shots as the Mountaineers pulled away late.
"We shot 33 percent I think and hit 38 percent from the outside," D'Antoni said. "That means we didn't shoot well inside."
Marshall led for just 43 seconds of the first half, but the game went to the locker room with the Herd having cut App State's lead to 31-29 after a strong finish to the first half.
App State hit seven of its first eight shots to go up by as many as nine early, but Marshall's defense tightened and the combination of Curfman and Voyles got the Herd back into the game.
Martin found Curfman on a cut to the basket to give Marshall a 22-21 lead before consecutive 3-pointers from App State put the Mountaineers back in front.
The Herd continues its road swing when the team travels to Conway, S.C., to take on Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
