BOONE, N.C. – Marshall's Women's Basketball team exploded in the fourth quarter to turn a tie game into an 87-78 road win over App State on Education Day at Holmes Convocation Center on Thursday.
Marshall saved its best offensive effort for the final quarter, hitting 11 of 18 field goal attempts to distance itself from the Mountaineers.
"I'm really, really happy to get out of here with a win," Marshall Women's Basketball coach Kim Caldwell said. "We knew it was going to be tough and they delivered."
With the win, Marshall moves to 18-6 overall and 12-1 in Sun Belt Conference action.
Abby Beeman finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lead Marshall. Of Beeman's 21 points, 11 came in the final period as the Herd guards wore down App State.
Marshall and App State went into the fourth quarter tied at 59 following a 3-pointer from Meredith Maier just before the buzzer at the end of the third quarter, which gave the Herd momentum going to the last frame.
The Herd used the momentum boost, going on an 18-4 run to push its lead to its biggest margin at 85-68 to earn the victory.
"They are a bunch of fighters," Caldwell said of her team. "I think at this time of year, anytime you can get in those situations and play yourself out of them, it's going to make you better down the stretch."
Marshall got a balanced effort in the win with several players making big contributions and hitting key shots to get the victory.
Maier ended the game with 14 points – 12 of which came on four 3-pointers – while Breanna Campbell and Sydni Scott each added 13 points. Tamia Lawhorne also came off the bench to score nine points, which included hitting back-to-back 3-pointers in a pivotal juncture for the Herd.
The two teams combined for 26 3-pointers in the back-and-forth affair with both shooting over 40 percent in that department on the day.
The hot shooting produced several runs for both teams as well. In the second quarter, Marshall went on a 10-0 run with a 10-second sequence that saw Maier and Scott sandwich a pair of 3-pointers around a Beeman steal.
At the start of the game, App State took an early double-digit lead after hitting five of its first seven 3-point attempts, but Marshall's defense locked down late in the quarter while the team got hot from the outside to end the quarter on a 12-0 run that produced a 22-20 lead.
Marshall now shifts its focus to the second leg of its four-game road trip, which comes at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Old Dominion. The Herd defeated ODU, 90-60, earlier this season in Huntington.
