Vanderheyden clinched match in singles

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (5-2) closed out the weekend with a 4-3 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3) Sunday afternoon in Barboursville.
"They came through," Herd Tennis head coach John Mercer said. "It was a hard battle. Fortunately, we got the doubles point. It got us in the lead, and we never gave it away. I'm proud of how they hung with it."
The Herd made quick work of the Hokies in doubles. Gabrielle Clairotte and Rieke Gillar took their match without dropping a game, 6-0, on court three and ax Doroteja Joksovic and Aisling McGrane finished off their match, 6-4, on court two to seal the doubles point.
Emma Vanderheyden and Johanna Strom's match went unfinished on court one as they led 5-0.
MU trailed early on during the first set in most of the matches. However, The Herd rallied. McGrane was the first to finish as she won 6-3, 6-2, in straight sets on court five. Joksovic quickly followed in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, on court three. Vanderheyden then sealed the match for Marshall 7-5, 6-1, on court two.
"That's what going to happen when you play against a team of that level. It's not going to be easy, and there will be ebbs and flows. You have to have the mental fortitude to battle through it," Mercer said about his team overcoming those early first set deficits.
