HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's Women's Basketball team got a balanced scoring effort and limited Louisiana to its lowest scoring output of the season in earning a 74-42 win over the Ragin' Cajuns in front of 3,024 fans on Education Day at Cam Henderson Center.
With the win, Marshall maintains its stance in first place in the Sun Belt Conference, moving to 17-6 overall and 11-1 in SBC play.
"I'm happy with that win today," Marshall Women's Basketball coach Kim Caldwell said. "That's a good team and a better team than what they looked like. It was a big game for us."
Marshall never left the contest in doubt, keeping Louisiana scoreless for the game's first six minutes in jumping out to an 11-0 lead in front of a raucous group of students who enjoyed a trip to the Cam Henderson Center for a fun day of basketball.
The players fed off the emotion of the 2,000-plus kids who traveled to the game, shooting 67 percent in the first quarter before continuing the momentum into the second quarter to build a 19-point lead at the half.
"They say we're relentless for 40 minutes and those kids were today for 40 minutes," Marshall guard Abby Beeman said of the crowd. "It helps us a lot and it's cool to have that atmosphere. Hopefully, they keep coming back."
Beeman led Marshall's balanced attack with 14 points while Sydni Scott added 11 and Breanna Campbell added 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Herd also got a strong performance off the bench from Tamia Lawhorne, who added seven points and tied for a team-high with three steals. As a team, Marshall had 15 steals and forced Louisiana into 28 turnovers.
Marshall now gets a few days off before starting a four-game road swing, which begins at Noon next Thursday at Appalachian State.
