Feringa Pitches Complete-Game Shutout in Doubleheader Split

2/9/2024 7:36:00 PM | Softball

Herd closes opening weekend Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Marshall's softball team earned Coach Morgan Zerkle her first career-win as manager in a doubleheader split Friday.

Herd pitcher Bub Feringa opened the day with a dominant 79-pitch complete game shutout. Feringa allowed just four hits on what was her first-career seven-inning shutout.

The junior from Glendale, Arizona pitched 10 scoreless innings total on Friday.

Junior Rielly Lucas drove in two of the Herd's runs offensively, with the winning-run against the Spartans coming in the opener.

First Game: Marshall 1, Michigan State 0

The Herd broke through on the Lucas RBI single up the middle to score Erica Holt. At the conclusion of both games Friday, Lucas has driven in four runs.

Feringa pitched to contact in her shutout, with shortstop Sydney Bickel playing a role in turning three double plays. Bickel had six assists and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the leadoff spot.

Bickel's most crucial turn came in the 5th with the Herd being put in a bases-loaded, no out situation. The Preseason All-SBC shortstop snagged a liner and doubled off the runner at first base. Feringa forced a popout to escape the jam and preserve the lead.

A lineout to Camryn Michallas ended the game in the 7th to give Coach Zerkle her first victory as the leader of the Herd.

Second Game: Penn State 5, Marshall 2

The Herd jumped out early on Penn State with an opposite field RBI double from Lucas, and a single up the middle from Bella Gerlach to give Marshall the early 2-0 lead. Gerlach - the Western Michigan transfer - leads the team with six RBI early.

The Nittany Lions settled in with two in the bottom half of the 1st, and three in the 3rd to close the game's scoring.

Feringa returned to the circle and finished the game with three more scoreless frames.
