Herd Softball Drops Midweek at No. 23 Kentucky

Marshall departs Lexington for Southern Miss Thursday
LEXINGTON, Ky. — No. 23 Kentucky made the most of a five-run 4th on its way to a 7-0 win over Marshall's softball team Wednesday afternoon.
The Herd (16-13) knocked four hits off the Wildcats' (20-8) ace Stephanie Schoonover, who pitched her fourth shutout of the season. Conversely, it was just the first time MU had been held scoreless all season, and only the second time Marshall scored less than two runs (1-0 win over Michigan State on Feb. 9).
UK scored two in the 1st, but Marshall starter Bub Feringa held the hosts scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd. Feringa forced six groundouts in 3.1 IP.
The Herd's Savannah Rice entered in relief of Feringa, keeping the 'Cats off the board in the 5th and 6th innings.
Kentucky was the fourth-ranked opponent the Herd has faced in 2024. The Herd has now played five teams who made the NCAA Tournament last season.

Marshall returns to Sun Belt Conference play Friday when the team opens a series against Southern Miss on Friday. First pitch from Hattiesburg is set for 6 p.m. EST, 5 local.
