Herd Falters Late at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Southern Miss Golden Eagles rallied for two runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to take a 6-3 decision over Marshall's softball team.
The Herd led early after a Bella Gerlach home run in the 1st. For Gerlach, it was her team-leading eighth of the season. Gerlach is second in the conference behind USM's Borden, whose decisive ninth gave her team the lead in the 5th.
After the hosts initially tied the game in the 4th, Marshall regained the lead in the top half of the 5th on a Brooklyn Ulrich sacrifice fly. MU had the bases loaded with no outs, but could not add to its 3-2 lead following the sacrifice fly to right.
As a team, Marshall was 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position Saturday. Conversely, USM was 2-for-13.
Starter Bub Feringa worked out of trouble in the opening frames, with the hosts loading the bases in each of the first three innings. Feringa avoided damage with inning-ending ground balls to protect the two-run Marshall lead.
With the Thundering Herd trailing by three in the 7th, Ulrich and Rielly Lucas reached, before a flyout and a tough-luck lineout double play ended the contest.
