HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis (14-6, 5-1 Sun Belt) opened the weekend with a 7-0 sweep of the Texas State Bobcats (9-4, 3-2 Sun Belt) to extend its winning streak to five matches on Thursday in Huntington.
"I thought we started really well in doubles, which set the tone for us in the match," Herd Tennis head coach John Mercer said after the match. "It was good that Dora and Ash got off to a really good start and kept that momentum going in singles to put them in a hole, which makes it tough mentally for your opponent. Then we finished strong with some competitive matches. Look forward to Saturday and we have to do it all over again."
The Herd made quick work of the Bobcats in doubles with Johanna Strom and Emma Vanderheyden dropping just a game on court one in a 6-1 win. Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane then followed with a 6-3 triumph on court two to seal the doubles point.
Then it was all MU in singles. Doroteja Joksovic finished first on court three with a 6-1, 6-2, victory. McGrane followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at number six singles. Strom clinched the contest on court one in straight sets (6-1, 7-5).
Vanderheyden, Hurrion and Rieke Gillar then completed the sweep with each taking three-set battles on courts two, four and five respectively.
