Marshall goes 3-2 in home-opening weekend
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall softball team (11-9), dropped the finale of the Thundering Herd Invitational to the Big Ten's Purdue, 10-3.
Junior Rielly Lucas led the Herd with two hits, including a home run to left center. Destiny Washington was the other MU player with multiple hits on the afternoon.
Through the season's first 20 games, Lucas is even with sophomore Bella Gerlach for Coach Morgan Zerkle's team with 18 runs batted in. Zerkle's Herd did finish the weekend with a winning 3-2 record.
"It was great to be home and play at the Dot," Zerkle said. "We had some good fan support even on the first couple of days when the weather was cold. Our first night gam was fun, the lights were fun and the fans were fun so a lot of good things happening at the Dot. We want some more wins in there of course but it was a great environment and a great opening weekend at home."

The Lucas home run pulled the Herd to within one after two innings. But a pair of errors allowed the Boilermakers to score runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th to build upon its lead.
RBIs from Washington and Abby Darnley scored Marshall its two separate runs in the contest.
