Marshall Tennis Picks Up Win Over App State

Vanderheyden sealed match at No. 2 singles

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (17-7, 8-2 Sun Belt) picked a up a key 4-3 victory over the App State Mountaineers (12-8, 6-4 Sun Belt) Saturday in Huntington.
"Our second and third doubles did a really good job today. Fortunately, we played good enough in spots at times to get a win," Herd Tennis head coach John Mercer said after the victory. "It was another windy day. Hopefully we get some calmer weather to play some better tennis, but it was good to find a way to win the match."
Sophia Hurrion and Aising McGrane got The Herd a quick first doubles win on court two with a 6-2 triumph. Then the duo of Gabrielle Clairotte and Doroteja Joksovic sealed the doubles point for MU with a 6-3 win on court three.
Joksovic continued her momentum into singles finishing first in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at number three singles. Rieke Gillar then made it 3-0 MU with a dominating 6-4, 6-0, performance on court six.
With the Mountaineers coming back and match at 3-2 Herd, Emma Vanderheyden slammed the door shut with a 6-4, 7-5, win to seal the contest for Marshall at number two singles.
"It was good for Emma. Hopefully she gets some confidence from that," Mercer said about Vanderheyden closing out the contest.
