Marshall currently 2nd in team standings heading into final day
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Marshall senior Tyler Jones shot an opening-round 66 and followed it up with another round under par to lead after Day One at the Mountaineer Invitational.
Through two rounds, Jones has 13 birdies, which included a stretch of seven in nine holes in his opening round as he jumped to the top of the leaderboard.
Jones' performance catapulted the Herd to second place in the current standings heading into the final day of action. The second round was halted with one group still on the course on their final hole.
"Tyler had an incredible day and that opening 66 was so impressive," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "I was very pleased with the way all our guys played."
Jones' nine-hole stretch in round one included a streak of four birdies from Holes No. 7-10 as he moved to the front.
In the second round, Jones showed his resilience. After a double-bogey on his second hole, Jones continued his strong play and showcased an ability to score, logging five birdies in the round, including one on the par-5, 604-yard No. 11 that put him back under par and gave him the outright lead.
In addition to Jones' strong day, Joseph Kalaskey started the event strong with a 1-under 71 in the opening round that featured four birdies.
Ryan Bilby shot consistent rounds of 74 and 73 to sit at 3-over for the tournament to place him in a tie for 13th. Cameron Jarvis is currently second for the Herd with eight birdies, including five during the second round as he shot a 1-over 73 to aid the Herd's cause.
"Ryan played really solid all day and Joseph's first-round 71 was great," Grobe said. "Cameron also played great in the afternoon. We are looking forward to tomorrow's final round."
With the final group of the second round yet to complete, those players will take the course at Pete Dye Golf Club at 7:30 a.m. to finish their play. Once they conclude, pairings will be set for the final round, which is scheduled to start at approximately 8:30 a.m.
