Herd Softball Battles in Defeat at #15 Virginia Tech

Marshall hosts App State for season’s final home series starting Friday
BLACKSBURG, Va. — A five-run 2nd inning by Marshall's softball team showcased the fight the team came with in a 9-7 loss Wednesday afternoon at #15 Virginia Tech.
The Herd (21-24) scored all five of its runs in the 2nd with two outs to take a lead on the 15th-ranked Hokies (37-9-1).
Kasia Parks loaded the bases with an infield hit to extend the 2nd inning rally before freshman Destiny Washington singled in her 10th and 1th runs batted in of the year to get MU on the board. Bella Gerlach drove in a run via a hit by pitch before starter Bub Feringa ripped a hit through the right side to score Washington and Brooklyn Ulrich.
VT - which set a program-record with its 101st home run of the year Tuesday - would retake the lead in the bottom half of the 2nd on one of its four long balls.
Senior pitcher Savannah Rice limited the fourth-ranked team in DI in batting average from the 3rd inning forward. Rice held the Hokies to three hits with just the one solo shot while striking out a batter in her 3.1 innings pitched in relief.
Coach Morgan Zerkle's team would continue to fight back offensively with a 5th inning home run to dead-center by Rielly Lucas. An inning later, Parks would score on an RBI groundout by Ulrich.
Wednesday's game was Marshall's fifth ranked opponent the team has faced in 2024.
UP NEXT
Marshall returns to Sun Belt Conference play Friday when the team hosts App State for a three-game series against App State. The opener is Friday at 6 p.m.
