Herring, Mastin Win Gold Medals to Highlight Final Day of SBC Outdoor Championships

Herd women finish in 5th (highest since 2013); Men place 10th
MONROE, La.- Marshall Track and Field won two gold medals at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday.Â
Senior Abby Herring won the Women's 5K in dominating fashion with a time of 16:26.29. Junior Kylee Mastin was equally solid in the Women's 1500 meter race with her time of 4:27.91. Both times were new Facility Records at Groseclose Track in Monroe. Herring and Mastin alike, now have a SBC Championship to their name in both Indoor and Outdoor Track this season.
Their gold medals capped the three-day SBC Outdoor Championships for Marshall, which saw the women finish with seven podium finishes and 15 scorers on its way to a 5th-place finish with 71.2 points - its highest team finish in a decade.
Other podium finishes for the MU women included Mikah Alleyne in the 400 hurdles, where she finished 3rd to lead a trio of finalists with Dezire Gee and Niyah Mitchell. Rebecca Merritt collected a 2nd-place finish in Discus. On Thursday, Merritt scored in the Hammer Throw. Tyra Thomas, who tied a school record in the 100 meter hurdle prelims Friday, finished 3rd Saturday.
The Herd men finished 10th in its second season upon returning as a program last year. Senior Evan White scored 3rd in the 5K in his final SBC race.
The meet concludes the first SBC Outdoor Championships led by Director of Track and Field Keith Roberts. Â
"I am definitely proud of our team and how we competed, I thought everybody laid it on the line today," Coach Roberts said. "Everyone really supported each other, we were the loudest team, the most prideful and I think Herd nation would be proud if they saw how we were supporting each other."

Individuals from Marshall now await to see if their marks qualify as one of the Top-48 marks in the East Region in NCAA D1. All qualifiers will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championship East Preliminaries beginning on May 22 from Lexington, Ky. Â
