HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 2 Marshall Men's Soccer team (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season, 2-0, to the Xavier Musketeers (2-0-1) on Thursday in Cincinnati, Ohio.
A result that didn't go our way, but I thought our performance was much better than our first match versus Fullerton," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "We created lots of chances, that on another day, we bury. The first PK was tough. I think if they had video review available it would have been overturned. The ref did a good job though, and these reviews are there to help them. The second was a free kick, and hats off to John and the Xavier staff, they caught us on an area we pride ourselves on. Xavier has great tactics for their small pitch, and again, hats off to them, they're a tough opponent. Still, I'm happy with our performance for the majority, and it's something we can build on."
The Herd offense fired shots at Xavier goalkeeper Jonny Mennell early and often. Marco Silva had the first shot on goal of the contest at 1:07 mark that was saved by Mennell.
Aymane Sordo had a shot saved in the 24th minute as Silva had another shot saved in the 36th minute of play.
In the second half, Pablo Simon had a shot saved in the 53rd minute with Tarik Pannholzer seeing an attempt stopped in the 65th minute.
Xavier tallied its first goal on a penalty kick by Dylan Kropp in 30th minute with Matthew Senanou adding a brace in the 49th minute.
The Herd outshot the Musketeers 12-5, including 5-2 in shots on goal in the contest.
