HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 2 Marshall Men's Soccer team (2-1) received six goals from six different scorers in a 6-1 win at Hoops Family Field over Loyola Maryland (0-2-1) on Monday.
"I think we started a little slowly, but as the game went on, we figured out what we needed to do," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I thought the guys executed what they needed to do quite well."
The Greyhounds had Marshall on its heels early in the contest with a goal from Sean McEvoy 52 seconds into the contest and Charlie Herley going in on a breakaway in the eighth minute as Aleksa Janjic stood tall for the save.
However, The Herd offense pushed back. Rai Pinto tied the contest on a penalty kick for his first goal of the season in the 15th minute after a Loyola handball.
Less than two minutes later, Theo Godard sent a pass to Loic Sany Kong who sent a left-footed volley from just outside the 18-yard box past the keeper at the 16:15 mark for a goal in his MU debut.
The Herd continued to press as in the 36th minute, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos fired a shot, but it was blocked. However, the blocked shot landed at the feet of Marco Silva who slotted home the ball to make it 3-1 Marshall.
Rodrigues dos Santos wanted to get in on the goal scoring. With just under three minutes left in the half, the senior forward forced a turnover and sent his shot into the bottom left corner to give MU a 4-1 advantage at halftime.
The offensive outburst continued into the second half. At the 81:27 mark, Aymane Sordo stepped up for a free kick and sent the opportunity past the keeper for his second goal of the season.
Then in the 87th minute, Pablo Simon took a pass from Ryan Holmes and fired a shot into the right side of the goal for his first of the season to make it 6-1 Thundering Herd.
Marshall was on the front foot offensively in the contest outshooting Loyola 21-5, including 11-2 in shots on goal.
