DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (1-0) opened its 2024 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) sweep of ETSU (0-1) at the Wildcat Classic in Davidson, North Carolia, on Friday.
Â
"Today was a good start to our 2024 season," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said. "We stayed consistent in our serve receive and executed our game plan. Beatrice (Ciccarelli) and Izzy (Collier) held strong offensively that allowed their block to stick with them and get McKenna (Melton) and Audrey (Geer) plenty of opportunities. Audrey had a great first match and I'm super excited about what's to come. Brynn (Brown) brown keeps us steady on all ends of the floor. Overall, every single person did their job. We're excited and ready to face a very tough Davidson in the morning."
Â
Audrey Geer registered a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs for a double-double in her collegiate debut as Brynn Brown dished out a match-high 27 assists.
Â
The first set opened with the teams trading points and leads as The Herd trailed 14-13 at the middle of the frame. Marshall trampled the Buccaneers the rest of the way going on a 12-4 run to win the first set 25-18. Geer, who had seven kills in the set, had four come during the run.
Â
Marshall followed its first set triumph with a 25-20 victory in set two. ETSU battled as the set was tied 9-9 through the first 18 points. However, a 6-0 run with two Buccaneer errors, a kill and ace by Geer, and kills from Olivia Fogo and Izzy Collier, put MU at a 15-9 advantage as it cruised to the 2-0 lead.
Â
Although the third was closest of three sets at 25-22, The Herd left it in little doubt. Marshall's lone deficit was at 1-0 and once it took a 2-1 advantage, MU carried the lead the rest of the way. The Herd hit a match best .367 as it completed the sweep.
