Marshall Volleyball Splits Final Two Matches at Wildcat Classic

Sweeps Elon, falls to Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (2-1) split its final two matches at the Davidson Classic on Saturday sweeping Elon (27-25, 25-23, 25-22) and falling to the host Davidson (17-25, 15-25, 18-25).
"I'm so proud of our team effort today," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said. "We didn't play clean enough against a very strong Davidson. Being able to turn right around and beat Elon was a huge test for our resilience and fight. Things got cleaned up quickly. Absolute team effort all weekend. We have a lot to clean up and workout on to get ready for next weekend!"
Marshall 3, Elon 0
McKenna Melton led the team with nine kills on 26 attacks as Beatrice Ciccarelli converted eight of her 14 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage to go with four blocks, three solos. Brynn Brown had a match-high 28 assists as Peyton Neal recorded 14 digs.
Marshall led the majority of the first set, but the Phoenix battled back and had match point at 25-24. The Herd, however, dug deep getting kills from Melton and Audrey Geer with an Elon error to take the opening frame 27-25.
The second set saw Elon leading 20-17. Marshall proceeded to go on an 8-3 run to take the frame 25-23. The Herd had a .200 attacking percentage in the set.
The third set featured the score tied 9-9 nearly midway through. Marshall then used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 15-9 advantage. The run paced The Herd to a 25-22 win in the final frame to seal the sweep. Marshall forced the Phoenix into nine errors to 12 kills for a .075 hitting percentage.
Davidson 3, Marshall 0
Brown led the way with 19 assists and 12 digs for a double in the contest. Melton converted 11 kills on 27 attacks for a .370 attack percentage. Ciccarelli had a second straight game with four blocks with four assists.
The Herd had the first set tied early at 1-1, but the Wildcats led the entire frame. Despite falling in the opening set 25-17, Marshall had a .211 hitting percentage.
The Herd couldn't overcome Davidson's offense in the second set. The hosts took the frame 25-15 with a .400 hitting percentage.
Marshall forced the Wildcats into a match-high eight attacking errors in the third set. However, Davidson took the final set 25-18 to take the match.

The Herd is back in action at the EMU Tournament next weekend when it starts play against Oakland at 4 p.m. on Friday.
