YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (3-1) opened the EMU Tournament with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 28-26, 25-19) victory over Oakland (1-3) on Friday evening.
Â
"From a really rocky start, I'm proud of how we gutted that win out," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said. "Brynn (Brown) and Peyton (Neal) were a huge piece of our stability. Izzy (Collier) did a great job in the middle for us and McKenzie (Schoenhardt), and Maya (Hunt) came in and allowed for a lot of different opportunities for us offensively! Our first ball contact and floor defense really needs to clean up and settle down to face two very tough opponents tomorrow."
Â
Brynn Brown registered her first triple-double of the season with a team-high 21 assists, match-high 20 kills and 14 digs in the victory. Peyton Neal had a match-high 26 digs as Maya Hunt had 20 assists. Izzy Collier, Beatrice Ciccarelli and Brown were each in on four blocks as the team finished with 11.
Â
The Herd led through the majority of the first set. However, the Golden Grizzlies rallied to tie the opening frame 17-17. Oakland captured eight of the final 13 points to take the first from Marshall 25-22.
Â
The second set saw the two sides trade the first six points to be deadlocked 3-3 early on. After Neal gave MU a 4-3 lead with a service ace, they did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. The Herd continuously built its lead in the second and closed it out on a 6-3 run to even the match at one set each.
Â
With the score tied 11 times and five lead changes, the third was a back-and-forth battle. With score tied 20-20, Marshall and Oakland proceeded to trade points until the score was 26 all. But with a kill by Brown and a service ace from Ciccarelli, The Herd took a 2-1 lead with a 28-26 triumph in the third set.
Â
Marshall hit .314 in the final set to complete the comeback after falling in the first with a 25-19 win in the fourth. Brown hit .500 with six kills on 10 attacks with just one error. Â
