Herd Volleyball Closes Out Undefeated Weekend at EMU Tournament

Brown registers triple-double against GWU, double-double against EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (5-1) finished the EMU Tournament a perfect 3-0 with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19) over George Washington and a 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-8, 15-10) triumph over host EMU on Saturday.

"We had a huge focus on floor and net defense this week, and they stepped up and stuck to the game plan," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said. "Brynn Brown did what she does best, it all. Our depth really allowed us to get strategic, but the consistency of Peyton (Neal) and Izzy (Collier) was crucial! Super proud but need to execute much better next weekend!"

Marshall 3, George Washington 1
Brynn Brown picked up her second triple-double of the weekend with 15 assists, 14 kills and 12 digs against the Revolutionaries. The senior finished with a .355 hitting percentage.

Peyton Neal finished with a match-high 21 digs as Izzy Collier and Audrey Geer had four blocks each, both recording a pair of solo efforts.

With the first set tied 5-5, The Herd used a 5-0 run to gain a 10-5 advantage as Olivia Fogo closed it off with a kill. The run paced MU the rest of the way not seeing its lead dip below four as it closed out the opening set on a 7-2 run with Collier finishing the set off with a kill for a 25-15 win.

Marshall dominated the second set. After an opening 1-1 tie early on, The Herd outpaced GWU the rest of the way. A 9-2 advantage put Marshall at a seven-point lead, 10-3, for its largest advantage of the set. The Revolutionaries battled back with two a couple of times, but MU weathered the storm to take the second 25-17. Marshall hit .268 in the set.

After dropping a narrow 25-23 decision in the third, The Herd came out with a vengeance in the fourth. Marshall opened the frame on an 8-0 run with a pair of kills by Brown and Collier and four GWU attacking errors. MU hit a match-high .275 as it never trailed in the fourth to take it 25-19 to seal the match.

Marshall 3, EMU 2
The Herd had three student-athletes finish with double-doubles against the Eagles as Brown had a match-high 18 kills and 12 assists, Bella Thompson finished with a team-high 20 assists and 10 digs, and Geer had 15 kills and 10 digs.

Neal registered a match-high 21 digs as Sarah Stratton recorded eight blocks with three solo rejections.

Despite falling in the first and third sets, MU never trailed in its second, fourth and fifth set wins.

In the second set, Marshall starts out on a 7-0 run with a pair of kills by Brown, a kill by Geer, a block assist, by Brown and Stratton, a pair of EMU errors and a Bella Thompson service ace. Although the Eagles got within two, 20-18, MU held off the hosts for the 25-19 win in the second.

The fourth set was all Marshall. The visitors took it to EMU with a match-high .458 hitting percentage on 12 kills and 24 attacks with just one error. The Herd held the Eagles to just eight points in its 25-8 triumph.

Marshall carried its momentum into the fourth with a 7-1 run to open the final set. The Herd held EMU to a -.087 hitting percentage as it closed out a perfect weekend with a 15-10 win to close out the match.
