First-year Head Coach Rafa Simoes leads team with 19 newcomers
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's soccer plays its opening preseason match Wednesday under first-year head coach Rafa Simoes. It is the first of two matches the team will play with its preseason camp based in Philadelphia.
"This team has exceeded expectation so far," Coach Simoes said. "The culture, the spirit, and quality of this team is immense. I am excited to see what this team will achieve!"
The squad's 19 newcomers come to Huntington representing 13 different countries and four continents.
Nine of the team's new additions making their debut for MU in 2024 are transfers, including two-time NJCCA National Champion Nicole Navarro (F/Barcelona, Spain) and St. Bonaventure midfield transfer Ami Komori (M/Otsu,Japan), named to the Atlantic 10 Rookie Team in 2022. Navarro scored 29 goals in two seasons for Iowa Western Community College.
Among Marshall's returners include two-time SBC Goalkeeper of the Week Alexis Wolgemuth (GK/Lincolnton, N.C.), who had five shutouts in nine matches in 2023. Bailey Fisher (F/Hurricane, W.Va.) led the league with five match-winning goals last year.
Marshall also anticipates the return of Luiza Travassos (M/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who scored four goals as a freshman in 2022.
Coach Simoes will have the luxury of the seven other veterans of the program - Ashlyn Drayer, Cameron Dye, Ava Hall, Alyssa Hardin, Rylie McKinney, Katie Porter, and Madison Townes - all of whom made a positive impact.
The Herd opens its regular season at home at Hoops Family Field next Thursday, Aug. 15 against Morehead State at 7 p.m. Season tickets for Marshall women's soccer can be found HERE.
