87th minute goal earns first victory as a Head Coach for Rafa Simoes
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The first player Coach Rafa Simoes signed when taking Marshall's head women's soccer job last December was junior transfer Angel Fowler.
On Sunday, the defender from the Greater-London area in England returned the favor, earning Simoes his first-career win as a head coach.

Fowler's 87th minute goal on a ball whipped into the box by veteran Madison Townes broke the scoreless deadlock and secured a 1-0 Marshall (1-2-1) victory over Belmont (1-4-0).

A proud Simoes spoke to the crowd at Hoops Family Field at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex following a water bath from his team.
"Thank you everyone for coming today," Simoes said." "Today was a special day!"
"We are undefeated at home so far and it is because of the crowd, the community. We know Huntington will embrace us."

The game-winning goal culminated what was a back-and-forth match between Marshall and the Bruins.
Marshall had five shots on target, with junior Bailey Fisher having three strikes from distance, all of which required difficult saves from the Belmont goalkeeper.
MU's goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth also had to make five important stops of her own, pitching her sixth-career clean sheet in goal. She is now tied for 5th in program history in shutouts.
Marshall's next match will be special as well for Simoes, who will coach against a mentor, Coach Aaron Rodgers of Ohio University. The Herd makes the short trip to Athens to face the Bobcats on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
