HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall redshirt senior defensive back J.J. Roberts was named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
For Roberts, it was the result of a game in which he tallied 15 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss while adding a forced fumble to his credit.
Robert was everywhere for the Herd defense in the second half, tallying 10 of his 15 tackles after halftime with his best work coming in the fourth quarter as Marshall turned up the intensity for a 27-20 win over Western Michigan.
One of Roberts' biggest plays of the game came with the game tied at 20 and Western Michigan looking to take the lead.
Roberts sprinted into the backfield and took down Western Michigan's Jaden Nixon for a loss that forced the Broncos into a third-and-long situation in rainy conditions.
The play proved crucial as Western Michigan fumbled the next play following a sack, which gave the Herd possession for the game-winning touchdown.
The 15 tackles match Roberts' career-high, which he set in the Oct. 14, 2023 contest at Georgia State.
