PRE-GAME NOTES
Marshall is looking for its second victory in as many years over the Hokies after capturing an exciting 24-17 win over VT in Huntington last season.
The Thundering Herd is also looking for its third consecutive season with a win over a Power Four opponent when it travels to storied Lane Stadium on Saturday afternoon (No. 8 Notre Dame, 2022; Virginia Tech, 2023).
There are many ties between the two schools on the personnel side, but none more important to either than Frank Loria, a former Virginia Tech standout and College Football Hall of Famer. Loria went on to be an assistant coach for Marshall following his playing days but was one of 75 victims who perished in the Marshall Plane Crash on Nov. 14, 1970, which is still considered the greatest sports-related air tragedy in history.
There is another tie between the teams on the field as former Middle Tennessee teammates and roommates Elijah Metcalf (Marshall) and Jaylin Lane (Virginia Tech) look to lead their teams to a win as two of the game's leading wide receivers.
ABOUT MARSHALL
Last week, Marshall's offense amassed 549 yards while the Herd had three quarterbacks each throw a touchdown pass in the game – the first time that has happened in 92 years. Stone Earle and Braylon Braxton each threw two TD passes while Cole Pennington threw another.
Running back A.J. Turner also finished with 119 yards on eight carries, which included the first points of the season on an 80-yard scoring run. Metcalf caught two touchdown passes – both from Earle – while Braxton connected with Christian Fitzpatrick (4 rec., 97 yards, TD) and Carl Chester for touchdowns in the balanced attack.
Defensively, Mike Green – a Williamsburg, Va., native – returns to his home state this week after a career-high performance with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks in last week's win. Fellow defensive lineman Chris Thomas had six tackles and two pass breakups also.
Head coach Charles Huff is in his fourth season leading the program and has compiled a 23-17 record.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH
Virginia Tech comes into Saturday's game looking for its first win of the 2024 season after an overtime road loss to Vanderbilt, 34-27.
In that contest, the Hokies fell behind 17-0, only to see the offense find its rhythm en route to a 27-20 lead following a 62-yard scoring toss from Kyron Drones to Ali Jennings. Vanderbilt was able to tie the game in the final two minutes before winning in OT.
Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for the Hokies and had four different receivers with at least 60 yards receiving – Jennings, Lane, Stephen Gosnell and Benji Gosnell.
Defensively, Keli Lawson had nine tackles while Mose Phillips III and Sam Brumfield – who also played at Middle Tennessee with Metcalf – each had seven tackles.
The Virginia Tech defensive line is coached by former Hokies standout J.C. Price, who also coached at Marshall in the same capacity from 2012-20.
