HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (13-10, 6-4 SBC) nearly overcame a 20-point second-half deficit in an 85-81 loss to the Georgia State Panthers (8-14, 4-6 SBC) Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
"Hats off to Georgia State. They came to win a basketball game tonight, and it showed from the tip," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said. "We talked about playing harder, playing tougher (in the second half). They got a lot of rhythm shots to start off. We knew they were going to go into the post, but our guards didn't help out either in terms of pressing the ball."
Obinna Anochili-Killen became just the 20th player in program history to reach 1,500 career points with a 22-point game on a 9-for-13 shooting night, including 2-for-5 from three. Dezayne Mingo tallied a team-high 23 points and seven assists.
The Herd registered its fifth straight game of at least four double-figure scorers as Jalen Speer had 15 and Mikal Dawson added 12.
Marshall trailed Georgia State by 20, 68-48, with 13:28 left in the game. MU rallied with a 9-0 run with five points from Anochili-Killen, a layup by Dawson and a jumper from Speer to cut the Panthers advantage to 11, 68-57, with 11:19 on the clock.
After GSU answered with five points, Marshall answered with 11 of the next 13 points scored to trail 75-68 with just over eight minutes remaining.
The Herd continued to chip away at the deficit until an Anochili-Killen triple cut it to one possession at 83-81 with 16 ticks on the scoreboard. Georgia State's Toneari Lane hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to hold off the Green and White's comeback.
MU held GSU scoreless on second-chance points outscoring the visitors 8-0 in the category and taking the offensive glass 10-5.
