Marshall Men Hold Off Coastal Carolina in 67-62 Victory

Mingo tallies 18 points and six assists

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (14-10, 7-4 SBC) staved off a late charge by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (8-15, 1-10 SBC) for a 67-62 win in the Henderson Center on Saturday evening.
"I thought we played hard. I thought we played with more of an edge to start the game," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said after the win. "We had preached that from the Georgia State game. I thought we let them get a little too comfortable. Hats off to Coastal. They came here and played well."
Dezayne Mingo tallied a game-high 18 points on a 7-for-15 shooting night to go with a game-high six assists with only one turnover. Mikal Dawson followed with 15 points on six makes from 11 attempts as Obinna Anochili-Killen added on 14 after a 5-for-10 day from the field with six boards and three blocks.
Neither side led by as more than nine points throughout the contest, but after leading for over 22 minutes, The Herd found itself down by one, 62-61, with 1:48 on clock after a Noah Amenhauser layup for Coastal.
However, Marshall came up clutch down the stretch. The Green and White's defense forced the visitors to go 0-for-3 in the final 1:48 and forced a turnover. On the offensive end, Anochili-Killen made four free-throws as Dawson iced the game off with a pair as eight seconds remained on the clock.
The first half was a tug-of-war. Marshall held the largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at six, 17-11, after Jalen Speer hit a triple at the 10:57 mark. The Chanticleers answered with a 10-0 run to see MU trailing 23-18 with 4:20 left in the first half.
The Herd then tallied the final four points of the opening half on a Dawson jumper and a thunderous slam by Erich Harding just before the buzzer to grab a 30-29 advantage at the break.
MU opened the second half on a 12-4 run ended by a jumper from Dawson six minutes in to take its largest lead of the game at nine points, 42-33.
The Herd turned the ball over just six times to forcing 15 and outscoring CCU 21-8 in points off turnovers. MU also out placed Coastal in fast break points, 12-0, and second-chance points, 17-8.

Marshall is set for a nationally televised game on ESPNU when it hosts Arkansas State at 9 p.m. on Wednesday night in the Henderson Center.
