HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 12 Marshall Men's Soccer team (6-4-1) picked up a 1-0 shutout over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Tuesday night at Hoops Family Field to close out non-conference play.
"They (Oakland) defended well, they sat in a low block, and we spent all day breaking them down," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I think we could have done that a little bit better. Then I don't like the end of the game. You know, it gets a little pandemonium. It's just we need to be sensible. I think there's some basic football things we can do to just make it a little bit easier on ourselves."
The decisive moment arrived just past the half-hour mark when Ryan Holmes found space at the top center of the box and fired a goal off a saved shot by Louie Salkeld. The goal was Holmes' first of the season with Salkeld registering his second assist.
Marshall finished the first half with 11 shots, including five on goal, while holding Oakland without an attempt.
The Golden Grizzlies had a pair of shots in the second half with a Kevin Hubbell attempt going off the post in the 75th minute.
MU outshot the visitors 19-2, 8-0 in shots on goal, with Salkeld leading the way with three shots on target.
Eddie DeMarco recorded his third win of 2025 including his first clean sheet.
