Barbie’s TD plunge in 2OT gives Herd a 40-37 win over Bobcats
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall running back Jo'Shon Barbie scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge in double-overtime to give the Thundering Herd a thrilling 40-37 win over Texas State in front of 27,533 fans for Homecoming 2025 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Saturday.
With the win, Marshall moves to 4-3 overall on the year and 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference.
"They kept believing and kept fighting for each other, the offense got on track in the second half and I'm just really, really proud of those guys," Marshall football head coach Tony Gibson said. "That's a good football team we beat, so that's a huge win for our program."
Barbie's game-winning run came after the Herd defense got a massive stop while on defense first in the second overtime. Jadarius Green-McKnight had a pass breakup on a third-down pass in the end zone that was rushed by Kerion Martin's quarterback pressure.
"When we needed the offense the most and everybody the most, I feel like everybody started clicking together, biting down and finishing," Barbie said. "We feel like we're a tough group and Coach (Dwight Galt) hit on that all week – being tougher than most guys. We showed it today."
Barbie, who was seeing his first action in several weeks, scored both overtime touchdowns for the Herd, also darting in on a 4-yard run to give the Herd the lead in the first overtime. The Bobcats countered with a scoring rush of their own to force the second OT.
Texas State led the game 24-16 early in the fourth quarter, but Marshall showed grit on both sides of the ball to come back. After Lorcan Quinn tied a Marshall program record with his fourth field goal of the game, Marshall's defense got a stop and used a big punt return by Demarcus Lacey to set up a short field.
The Herd cashed in on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Carlos Del Rio-Wilson to Adrian Norton, which preceded a two-point conversion rush by Lacey to make it 27-24 Marshall. The Bobcats got a 50-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime.
In the first three quarters, Marshall's offense sputtered at times, only finding the end zone once, but Quinn matched the Herd program record with four field goals to keep the team within striking distance. It was the first time a Marshall kicker had four field goals in a game since Rece Verhoff did so in a 12-0 win over Old Dominion in 2022.
Texas State came into the game leading the Sun Belt in rushing yards at 250 per game, but the Herd defense shut down the rushing attack to less than half of its average and only 2.6 yards per rush in securing the win.
"Complimentary football – that's what Coach Gibson always tells us," said Marshall linebacker Javae Gilmore. "When the offense does good, we just want to come back and do the same thing. When you keep doing it back and forth, the outcome of the game will be a win."
Gilmore led that attack with 12 tackles while Boogie Trotter added 10 – both of which are career-highs for each.
Del Rio-Wilson continued his solid play at quarterback for the Herd, finishing 22 of 32 for 277 yards with a touchdown and interception while rushing 17 times for 88 yards in the win.
The Herd now takes next week off before hitting the road for a nationally-televised Thursday night matchup against Coastal Carolina at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 30. That game will be shown on either ESPN or ESPN2.
