Women’s Soccer Strengthens Postseason Position with 2-0 Victory at App State

10/19/2025 3:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOONE, N.C. – Marshall (7-4-3, 3-2-3 Sun Belt) leaned on its defense and struck for a pair of second half goals to earn a pivotal 2-0 road win in the elements over App State Sunday afternoon, strengthening its postseason position in the Sun Belt Conference.

"App State at their place is a tough place to win, we were against the wind in the first half and the girls did a good job to stay focused," Head Coach Rafa Simoes said. "In the second half we had the wind and we had incredible focus and determination, the principles we need to win. Even after the second goal we kept pushing. Tiggi (Gent) off the bench was incredible and our entire team was as well."

After a tense, scoreless first half that featured four saves by goalkeeper Emma Durand, the Herd broke through in the 69th minute. Marcella Alves deflected a well-timed pass from Madison Townes, who set up Tiggi Gent for the first goal of the match. Gent's finish put Marshall ahead 1-0 and shifted momentum firmly to the Herd.

App State pushed for an equalizer, but Marshall's back line held firm, anchored by Durand's command in net. In the 78th minute, Alves put the match out of reach, scoring off another corner from Fernanda Dantas to double the lead to 2-0.

The ninth assist of the season from Dantas keeps her on pace for the league lead and third in NCAA Division I as of matches completed Sunday.  Alves' multi-point effort Sunday has the duo tied with Bailey Fisher, all with 13 points apiece for the Herd this season.

With the win, Marshall now has 12 points, in a three-way tie for 6th in the SBC standings. The top and maintained its advantage over App State in the Sun Belt standings. Support the Herd's postseason push by contributing to the Championship Fund.
