HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 9 Marshall Men's Soccer team (8-1-4, 5-1-0 SBC) delivered a dominant 4-0 clean sheet on Wednesday night over the South Carolina Gamecocks at Hoops Family Field.
The shutout marked the third consecutive for The Herd as Associate Head Coach Josh Faga was acting head coach with Chris Grassie being suspended for the match after receiving a red card at James Madison.
"It was great. Chirs (Grassie) makes it easy. He gave a speech before the game with how much trust he has in the team and also the trust he has in the staff," Faga said. "He talked about his leadership style as he likes to empower the people around him. It didn't feel difficult because he empowers us on taking those leadership roles. It felt kind of normal."
The Herd took control in the 31st minute when David de la Vibora broke the deadlock with a solo run and slotting home his third goal of the season. Six minutes later, Gabriel Stevanato doubled the lead, turning in a corner kick from Yasha Schaerer with a header for a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Rai Pinto extended the margin just three minutes into the second half, firing home a free kick from distance to make it 3-0.
The attacking onslaught continued, and in the 77th minute, Carl Romberg finished off a pass from Takahiro Fujita to complete the 4-0 scoreline.
Marshall's defense stifled South Carolina, allowing only two shots and just one on target. Goalkeeper Eddie DeMarco anchored the back line for his third clean sheet of the season. The Herd outshot the Gamecocks 14-2 and finished with an 8-4 advantage in corners, highlighting their dominance across the field.
