Herd defense forces 28 turnovers, but late rally falls short in first meeting with Indiana since 1981
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Marshall Women's Basketball dropped its first game of the season Tuesday night, falling by six to Indiana, 57-51 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Herd (2-1) battled through a tough offensive start but showed grit, making five of its last seven field goal attempts while forcing the Big Ten's Hoosiers into a season-high 28 turnovers.
"I am a mix of emotion," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "I am not a moral victory person and we thought we could get this game. Defensively we did a really good job, we absolutely understood the plan."
"We battled, we just weren't settled in the 1st quarter on offense and then we got settled and we missed layups and we [still] had a chance. On the flip side, there was a lot of really good things. We got 18 steals on defense, we held them and there was a lot of good, but we could have got that one."
Marshall struggled offensively early, managing only six points in the opening quarter on 15 percent shooting. Indiana built a 24-17 lead by halftime, capitalizing on MU's 16 first half turnovers and winning the rebounding battle throughout the game. Despite trailing by as many as 16 in the final quarter, the Herd kept pressing defensively, forcing the 28 Indiana turnovers and 18 steals as a team.
Freshman Olivia Olson led Marshall for her third consecutive double digit game with 11 points. Senior Blessing King anchored the inside with 10 points and five rebounds. Timaya Lewis-Eutsey sparked the defense with six steals and contributed nine points.
Marshall found its footing offensively in the final quarter, outscoring Indiana 21-14. Treshondra Williams provided a late spark with a pair of back-to-back three-pointers, and bench contributions from Kassie Ingram and Timberlynn Yeast with her team-leading six boards helped narrow the gap.

The matchup against a Big Ten opponent offered valuable experience and highlighted areas for growth as the team prepares for Saturday against No. 23 Kentucky.
"Kentucky is obviously going to be even bigger than what we just saw today," Coach Fulks added. "I think that has kind of been Kentucky's calling-card or at least [Coach Kenny Brooks] is that [Coach Brooks] has really physically big teams. This was good for us because we had to rebound by committee on both ends of the floor. We had a lot of good possessions but we had a couple that got away from us and we really wish we could have had those back. The size and speed is really hard to replicate at any point so this was good for that."
