AMHERST, Mass. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2025-26 season with a 78-72 road victory over UMass on Monday night in Amherst. Massachusetts.
"I'm proud of our guys," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the win. "They responded in a huge way. Winning is hard. It's difficult. When you come on the road against a quality opponent, a Final Four head coach, it's special. I'm really proud of our guys toughing it out."

Noah Otshudi finishied with 10 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals, including game-sealing free throws in the final minute. The Herd connected on 10 three-point field goals, with Hollenbeck's fast-break three at the 17:26 mark of the second half giving Marshall a 46-41 lead and igniting a crucial run.
Momentum swung multiple times in the final period. After Massachusetts briefly took a two-point lead on a Marcus Banks three with 15 minutes remaining, Fricks responded with a dunk to tie the game. Moments later, Jalen Speer drilled a three-pointer to put the Herd back in front 51-48, a lead Marshall would not relinquish again.
