HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 17 Marshall Men's Soccer team (9-2-5, 6-2-1 SBC) registered its fifth clean sheet in its last six matches in a 2-0 win over UCF to close out the regular season at Hoops Family Field on Tuesday. Carl Romberg recorded the first two-goal contest of his Marshall career.
"It was a great job keeping a clean sheet," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "Their number 10 Clarence was a very good player, causing a lot of problems any time he got loose on the ball. Then we made some changes to start dealing with that, but then we invited some other pressure, but overall I think we defended really well."
The Herd wasted no time establishing control as Romberg opened the scoring in the 12th minute, firing a shot after a ball landed at his feet after a deflection off a UCF defender.
Just over three minutes later, Romberg doubled the lead by finishing off a feed from Alvaro Alvarez, putting Marshall up 2-0 by the 15th minute.
UCF applied late pressure, earning eight corners and testing the defense, but Eddie DeMarco delivered three second-half saves—including key stops in the final 10 minutes—to preserve his shutout. Marshall finished with a 14-8 edge in shots (8-3 on target).
The shutout marked the sixth of the season for MU.
