HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (7-4) overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and delivered a dramatic 76-74 comeback win over Wright State in a tense non-conference battle at the Cam Henderson Center on Saturday.
"What a game," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the win. "We'd make a run, they'd answer and vice versa. I'm glad we were able to outlast them. Obviously the three was big that Wyatt hit. He showed a lot of toughness in that moment. But we knew they were going to be a tough game. They're better than their record."
Wright State led 39-32 at the break, but the Herd (7-4) responded with a gritty second-half effort. Marshall recorded 12 total blocks and outscored Wright State 44-35 after halftime.
Wyatt Fricks was the hero for the Herd, pouring in 19 points on 6-for-8 shooting and burying the go-ahead three-pointer with 43 seconds left to give Marshall a 73-71 lead. The shot came moments after Wright State briefly took the advantage on a late three, highlighting the back-and-forth drama of the final minute.
Noah Otshudi added 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line. Otshudi's timely jumper with just over a minute remaining put Marshall ahead 70-68 and capped an 18-6 second-half advantage in the paint for the Herd.
Matt Van Komen anchored the defensive effort, finishing with 11 rebounds and seven blocks. Marshall held Wright State to just six free-throw attempts by staying out of foul trouble.
Jalen Speer contributed 14 points, a game-high seven assists and three steals. Marshall's final defensive stand after Fricks' three-pointer preserved the comeback, and the Herd made just enough free throws to hold off a late rally led by Wright State's Michael Cooper, who finished with a game-high 22 points.
Marshall's defense stood tall when it mattered most, recording 12 blocks compared to Wright State's five.
