Strom, Mokrynskaya earn pair of victories for Herd on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Marshall Tennis continued its successful start to the 2025 Spring season on Sunday, earning a convincing 5-2 win over in-state rival West Virginia at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, W.Va.

With the win, Marshall moves to 11-1 on the season and solidifies itself as the premier tennis program in the state of West Virginia.

"It was a great team effort today," Marshall Tennis coach John Mercer said. "Everyone knew it would be a grind playing on the road, but everyone showed a lot of resiliency and that effort got us the win. I'm really happy for our seniors. They wanted this one."

Alina Mokrynskaya and Johanna Strom each earned a pair of wins on the day as the Herd took down the Mountaineers.

Mokrynskaya teamed with Emma Vanderheyden to earn a dominant 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles before Strom and Nel Van Hout clinched the doubles point with their own solid performance in a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

With the Herd leading 1-0 in the match, Mokrynskaya quickly increased that advantage with a 6-4, 6-2 win over WVU's Michaela Kucharova at No. 3 singles. Soon after, Strom followed by taking the momentum from a 7-5 win in the first set and clinching her match with a 6-1 victory in the second set.

Marshall clinched the match at No. 4 singles in the day's most competitive match as Nour El Ouazzani used a pair of tiebreak victories in each set to earn a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) win over WVU's Maja Dodik, to give the Herd the victory.

Sophia Hurrion also earned a win in singles at No. 5, besting WVU's Laura V Morillo, 6-2, 6-1.

Marshall now sets its sights on Sun Belt Conference play, which begins at 2 p.m. on March 7 with a match at James Madison.
