Spears tabs former Assistant Coach to lead program into future

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Athletics announced on Wednesday that Heather Stout would take over as the 13th Head Coach of the Marshall Volleyball Program.

Stout is no stranger to the program, having served as an Assistant Coach for the Thundering Herd during the 2024 season. Prior to coming to Marshall, Stout was the head coach at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. for four years.

"Sometimes, the best person for the gig is right down the hall," said Christian Spears, Marshall Director of Athletics. "We are excited to see what Heather will accomplish with this team as our Head Coach! She has the full support of the student-athletes. She wants to be at Marshall and she has a background that has proven to be successful for us. Let's all welcome Heather to our Head Coach group as she helps us chase another Sun Belt Conference title."

Stout's previous head coaching career shows an ascent to success. During her time at CUA, the Cardinals improved their win total in each season under Stout, which was capped with a 20-12 record in 2023 before she joined the Herd staff as Assistant Coach.

Now, Stout ascends into the head coaching role to take over a Marshall program in which she has built familiarity and already established expectations.

"I am overjoyed and humbled to be the head coach of Marshall University!" Stout said. "I'd like to thank Brad Smith, Christian Spears and Beatrice Crane Banford for trusting me to lead this program.

"It's been an honor to have been here and to help build for the future of what I know is going to be a successful and exciting time for Marshall Volleyball! I love the community of Huntington and am grateful that I get to call this place home!"

In addition to the on-court success, Stout's program at CUA also earned the AVCA Team Academic Award from 2020-22, which went to teams that averaged a 3.3 grade point average and above.

Stout is also familiar with the in-state landscape, having played four seasons and served as team captain for Glenville State where she earned her B.A. in Early Education and Behavioral Science in 2014. She later earned her Master's Degree in Sport Management from Brooklyn College in 2016.
