CLEARWATER, Fla. — Marshall Softball was tasked with the assignment of opening its season with the reigning USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year NiJaree Canady and No. 10 Texas Tech on opening night. MU battled in a 2-0 defeat from the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
The Herd (0-1) with the combined pitching of Bub Feringa and debuting Jules King held the Red Raiders (1-0) to two runs on three hits while striking out seven.
Both Feringa and King stranded the bases loaded with less than two outs. MU stranded six TT runners in scoring position.
Marshall had one hit from the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Brooklyn Ulrich in the 1st. Coach Morgan Zerkle's Herd nearly took the lead in the 3rd off Canady when last season's team-leader in home runs Bella Gerlach had a ball robbed in right-center by the 2024 SBC Player of the Year and Louisiana transfer Mihyia Davis.
Offensively, the Herd had four reach base on a hit-by-pitch.
Marshall gets two games on Friday starting with No. 15 Missouri at 1 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Southern Miss.
