HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 65 Marshall University Tennis team (13-3, 2-2 SBC) picked up a big 4-0 sweep of the No. 48 South Alabama Jaguars (10-3, 3-1 SBC) Sunday at the 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.
Â
"It was a little closer than the sweep shows," Herd Tennis Head Coach John Mercer said after the win. "They (South Alabama) are always a very competitive and well coached team. They're tough to get four points on. I'm excited. It's good to a ranked win. It's a really good conference and every match is a battle."
Â
In doubles, Emma Vanderheyden and Alina Mokrynskaya wasted little time taking their contest at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, over Delien Kleinhans and Rio Maeda.
Â
At No. 3 doubles, Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout trailed Lara van der Merwe and Manal Ennaciri, 3-0. However, the MU duo powered back with six of the final seven games to win 6-4 and clinch the doubles point.
Â
The Herd carried its momentum into singles with Sophia Hurrion taking her contest in straight sets over Ennaciri, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 4 singles.
Â
Then Strom and Nour El Ouazzani nearly finished simultaneously with Strom taking her match at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, and El Ouazzani clinching the match at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.
