Herd senior fires a 5-under 66 in opening round at Magnolia Grove
MOBILE, Ala. – Marshall senior Joseph Kalaskey fired a 5-under 66 to lead Marshall Men's Golf on Day One at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Alabama, on Sunday afternoon.
Kalaskey finished as one of only 15 players in the field to finish under-par, using a strong effort to tie for third overall after the first day of action.
"Joseph played incredible today," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "The conditions were so tough today and he shot a 5-under 66."
Kalaskey had seven birdies in his first 18 holes of the tournament, including a stretch from Hole Nos. 8 to 10 in which he birdied three straight.
Later, the Charleston native followed with three birdies in four holes on Hole Nos. 14 to 17 to help solidify the opening round that led Marshall to a top-4 spot in the team standings on the first day.
In addition to Kalaskey, Marshall's J.F. Aber and Ryan Bilby also shot 1-over 72s on the day, which also helped the Herd in the strong opening round.
Aber finished with four birdies while Bilby added three for the Herd.
"Ryan and J.F. both battled hard to come in at 1-over par for the day and both made birdies to finish their day," Grobe said. "Today was a great day for us and I am really excited about the poise the guys displayed today. There is some weather in the forecast tomorrow and I am looking forward to seeing how we handle that adversity."
Weather pending, action gets back underway starting at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning with 18 holes at Magnola Grove. The final round on Tuesday will feature a shotgun start, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
