Softball Hosts Texas State For Pivotal Sun Belt Conference Series

Series features Saturday doubleheader
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The leaders of the Sun Belt Conference, Marshall Softball (19-13, 5-1 SBC) face second-place Texas State (20-8, 4-2 SBC) starting Friday at 6 p.m. from Dot Hicks Field.Â
As a schedule change note, Saturday will be a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. with the Sunday finale being moved up a day due to weather.

Coach Morgan Zerkle
- Marshall is in its second season under Head Coach Morgan Zerkle. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017). Â
- Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - has been drafted to the AUSL's Bandits this past January, alongside Assistant Coach Sydney McKinney.Â
MARSHALL NOTES
- The Herd has won five of six to open league play, first breaking Louisiana's 89-series series winning streak before sweeping JMU on the road last weekend. Marshall is the only team entering the third week with five wins or more in league play. Â
- Several Marshall players have earned recognition for the hot start. Senior Rielly Lucas was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday. A day later, Chandler Hoskins was named the 7th-ranked Mid-Major Freshman by Softball America. As a team, Marshall was ranked No. 17 in D1Softball's Mid-Major Poll.Â

ABOUT TEXAS STATE
- The Bobcats are the defending SBC Tournament Champions. Texas State is 20-8 this season, opening league play with a series sweep over App State before dropping two of three to Coastal last weekend.Â
- Junior infielder and Texas A&M transfer Aiyana Coleman leads the team with a .391 average and 10 home runs.Â
- As a team, the Bobcats are second in the conference with a 2.93 team ERA. Lefty Madison Azua has 10 wins in the circle with a 2.16 ERA. Â
- The two programs met for the first time in 2023 in Marshall's first season in the SBC. TXST leads the all-time series, 6-1, including eliminating the Herd in the tournament quarterfinals.
