Big Inning Costly for Herd Softball in Opener

MOBILE, Ala. — Marshall Softball (22-18, 8-5 SBC) dropped its series opener at South Alabama (16-23, 5-7 SBC) by a 5-3 score.
The hosts scored four of its five runs in the 3rd with a three-run blast doing the majority of the damage.
The Herd started strong with a two-run double by Brooklyn Ulrich in the 1st. She is now the third Marshall player with 25+ runs driven in this season.

Senior Kasia Parks would drive in MU's other run with a double in the left-center gap in the 4th to bring her team within a run.
Starter Bub Feringa pitched two scoreless innings to start, but was pulled following a pair of singles and an error before USA's three-run blast in the costly 3rd. Sophomore Jules King would rally to pitch three scoreless, including a pair of strikeouts to escape a bases-loaded jam in the 5th.

The Herd nearly tied it with senior Rielly Lucas getting robbed by a diving catch up the middle which would have leveled the scoring in the 6th.
Game two starts at 4 p.m. eastern, 3 p.m. central time Saturday.
