Herd Falls in Series-Opening Pitching Duel to Coastal Carolina
4/17/2025 8:36:00 PM | Softball
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall (23-20, 9-7 SBC) and Coastal Carolina (34-12, 10-6 SBC) entered its series as two of the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference in batting average and home runs. But it was the pitching and defense which took center-stage in a 2-0 Chanticleers victory Thursday evening at Dot Hicks Field.
Thursday was just the fourth time MU was held scoreless in 2025, the first since February 22.
Coastal has been shut out just once this season, but was held to four hits by starter Bub Feringa with a two-run home run in the 4th being the difference in the contest.
Feringa pitched all seven innings with three strikeouts and a pair of double plays turned.

Marshall outhit the visitors, 6-4. Coach Morgan Zerkle's team had its best chance in the 5th before CCU starter Nicolette Picone struck out consecutive hitters with the bases loaded. Picone leads the SBC with 21 wins in the circle this season.
Senior Kasia Parks led Marshall with two hits. She now has six hits in her last nine at-bats dating back to the start of last weekend's South Alabama series.
Game two Friday is set for 5 p.m. and will be Disney Day at Dot Hicks Field.
