Herd Rallies Past Coastal With Five Runs in Final Two At-Bats

4/18/2025 8:51:00 PM | Softball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall Softball (24-20, 10-7 SBC) hit four home runs, two off the bat of sophomore Haleigh Adkins en route to a 6-4 come-from-behind victory over Coastal Carolina (34-13, 10-7 SBC) Friday evening at Dot Hicks Field.

The Herd scored three in the sixth to mark its sixth Sun Belt Conference victory this season in its final at-bat (seventh overall).

"We know we have a good hitting team," Coach Morgan Zerkle said. "We said yesterday defense and pitching did well, we just needed to get those runs in and not leave people on base and today we only left one runner on base. That was a nice adjustment they made from yesterday and we got the big hit when we needed it."

Like yesterday, Marshall had strong starting pitching from Paige Maynard. The junior set a new Marshall career-high with eight strikeouts. Maynard allowed just the three hits, holding the Chanticleers scoreless outside of the third inning.

She struck out the side in the sixth prior to the Herd rally.

Adkins's go-ahead shot marked her first collegiate multi-home run game. The two-run blast scored Bub Feringa who followed fellow senior Rielly Lucas with the game-tying home run two batters earlier. Lucas leads the team with 14 home runs and is tied for fourth in the league.

Other timely hitting came from Abby Darnley, who gave the Herd its first hit with a solo shot in the third. Freshman Tia Titi had a pinch-hit two-out RBI in the fifth to follow the first blast from Adkins.

The rubber game and series finale is at noon on Saturday. The game is Marshall's annual Lil' Sis game and will be crucial for both teams currently tied for fourth in the Sun Belt standings.
