Jesse Smith To Serve As Speaker For Spring Fountain Ceremony

Herd’s 1974 Team Captain keynotes 11:30 a.m. ceremony to precede 2025 Marshall Football Spring Game on April 12

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Jesse Smith, the 1974 Marshall Football Team Captain, will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2025 Marshall Spring Fountain Ceremony.
The ceremony takes place at 11:30 a.m. on April 12 at the Marshall Memorial Fountain, located outside of the Marshall Memorial Student Center.
The annual event also leads into the 2025 Marshall Football Spring Game, which will conclude the first spring practice for the Herd under first-year head coach Tony Gibson.
Fans looking to go to the ceremony can park in the West Lot at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, which will open at 9 a.m. on April 12. Parking for the day is $20.

Patrons who also attend the 11:30 a.m. ceremony prior to the game will hear from Smith, who came to Marshall as an offensive lineman for the Young Thundering Herd in 1971 after graduating as Valedictorian from Barrackville High School in Fairmont, West Virginia, that same year.
The Fairmont native spent four years with the Thundering Herd, joining Allen Meadows as team captains for his final season in 1974.
Following his Marshall career, Smith's career led him to Monongahela Power, where he retired from in 2003 after 20 years of service. Smith now resides in Conyers, Georgia with his family.
Smith graduated from Marshall University in 1975 with a B.A. in Political Science/History while later earning a Master's Degree from West Virginia University in 1979.
Gates for the 2025 Spring Game will open at 2 p.m. and action will get underway with a 3 p.m. kickoff in which the first half is a live scrimmage and the second half is set up as a Fan Day for those in attendance.
