Coach Morgan Zerkle

  • Marshall is in its second season under Head Coach Morgan Zerkle. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).
  • Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - has been drafted to the AUSL's Bandits this past January, alongside Assistant Coach Sydney McKinney.

MARSHALL NOTES

  • The Herd is in a three-way tie for first place in the SBC, even with Georgia Southern and ULM with a 7-2 league record. Marshall has been ranked 13th in this week's D1Softball Mid-Major Poll.
  • Junior pitcher Paige Maynard threw 196 pitches in the team's extra-inning victory Saturday over Texas State. The Herd has taken down both the reigning SBC regular season and tournament champions in a three-game series in 2025.
  • Freshman Diamond Leslie continues to lead the team with a .405 average. Leslie and senior Kasia Parks each had run-producing hits to keep the team alive when down to its final out in the win Saturday.

ABOUT APP STATE

  • App State is 13-20 and 4-5 in league play. The Mountaineers just christened its new stadium two weeks ago as 30 of its 33 games have been played away from Boone.
  • The Mountaineers are coming off a sweep at JMU, a first conference series win for first-year head coach Whitney Jones. App swept the SBC's weekly awards with Pitcher of the Week Sophie Moshos and Player of the Week Makayla McClain.
  • Marshall is 9-2 all-time against App, winning all four games the teams have played as Sun Belt Conference opponents.
