Thomas, Aber finish tourney in top-15 to cap solid week at True Blue

Final Results

PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Marshall Men's Golf wrapped up a successful effort at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge on Wednesday afternoon at True Blue Golf Course in Pawley's Island, S.C.

Clayton Thomas finished the tournament in 14th place and J.F. Aber ended up tied for 15th after both had impressive showings this week. The Herd finished its day at 2-under as a team and moved up two spots to finish 7th out of 17 teams.

Aber led Marshall with a 2-under on Wednesday while Ryan Bilby had six birdies and was also 1-under for the Herd on the final day of action.

"It's what I thought we had," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "I thought we (showed) it in the first round and I thought we had it on the front-nine (today). What I'm really excited about for these guys is that, toward the end, we had a chance. This whole week was just an incredible experience and I'm so proud of these guys."

The Herd was one of the first teams off the No. 1 tee on Wednesday and instantly, Marshall made its ascent up the leaderboard as Ryan Bilby and Joseph Kalaskey set the tone with each collecting two birdies in their first three holes of action.

It was part of a front-9 effort for the Herd in which the team collected 14 birdies and one eagle – that by Thomas on the par-5 4th hole after he hit a 4-iron to within 15 feet and drained the eagle putt.

Aber was the model of consistency throughout the week, firing three rounds of par or better. On Wednesday, Aber ended his tournament with a 25-foot birdie putt down a slope that capped his week in style.

Bilby carded his second round under par on Wednesday with an impressive showing in which he had six birdies to lead the Herd. That included three in a four-hole stretch from Nos. 7-10.

Kalaskey and Cameron Jarvis each also carded 1-over 73s in a strong day. Kalaskey birdied three of his first four holes of the day while Jarvis had a pair of impressive birdies – one on the par-5 No. 9 in which he got a sand shot on a side-lie to within four feet before hitting the putt and another on No. 18 when he hit a 20-foot breaker to finish his day.

"I couldn't have asked for a better tournament to get ready for our season," Grobe said.

The team now has a bit of time off before traveling to the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, which is set for April 14-15 at Pete Dye Golf Course in Bridgeport, W.Va.
