HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 2 Marshall Men's Soccer team (1-0-1) battles the No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0-1) to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
"The soccer gods hate when you keep missing chances," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "We had five or six really good looks in the first half then they have the one. It's still really only our fifth game (including exhibitions). It takes like our seventh game to get match fit. So we're still getting there with sharpness."
Down 2-1 in the 88th minute, The Herd earned a penalty. MoMo Diop stepped to the spot for MU and buried the opportunity to equalize the match as it finished in a draw.
Virginia Tech took the first lead of the contest late in the first half on a goal from Ian Marcano in the 43rd minute on the team's first shot on goal as the visitors held a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Marshall responded swiftly after halftime when Yasha Schaerer drew the penalty, and Rai Pinto converted it in the 53rd minute to level the score for The Herd.
The Hokies regained the advantage in the 80th minute on an Alex Perez goal seeing Marshall trail 2-1.
Goalkeeper Dan Rose came up with a big save at the 85:14 mark to keep score 2-1 before Diop's tying goal in the 88th minute.
Marshall finished with a 19-4 shot advantage and held Virginia Tech to just one corner while having eight.
