Marshall Volleyball Falls at Virginia Tech

Barnett finished with 14 kills
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (4-4) opened the Hokie Invitational with a 3-1 (26-28, 25-15, 25-11, 25-21) loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday.
"We struggled tonight with a consistent serve receive this hindered us offensively to get into a groove," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "I thought Elli Barry was huge for us in transition giving us some momentum into the fourth. We are still working through line ups and different personnel which is what our preseason schedule is for.We have two more opportunities tomorrow to make adjustments and capitalize on the weekend."
Emma Barnett led The Herd with 14 kills and eight digs, hitting .250 for the match. Audrey Geer turned in a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Elli Barry was efficient at the net with eight kills on 16 attacks and a .438 hitting, as Bella Thompson distributed 20 assists and tallied five digs.
Marshall outlasted Virginia Tech 28-26 in a back-and-forth opening set. The Herd overcame multiple set points with clutch swings from Barnett and Geer, sealing the set in extra rallies.
Virginia Tech responded with a 25-15 second set win hitting .306 and then the Hokies hit .560 without an attack error to take the third 25-11.
The Herd trailed late but mounted a push to close within 21-19 in the fourth set. Virginia Tech's blocking and timely kills held off the rally, taking the set 25-21 and the match.

Marshall closes out the Hokie Invitational on Friday with matches against Robert Morris at 2 p.m. and UMES at 4:30 p.m.
