Marshall Football To Host Austin Peay In 2030 Season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall VP/Director of Athletics Gerald J. Harrison announced on Thursday that an agreement is in place for Marshall Football to host Austin Peay during the 2030 season.

The game will take place on Sept. 14, 2030, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium and will serve as the first-ever contest between the programs.

"We're excited to add another quality opponent to our future football schedule," Harrison said. "Austin Peay's football program has been on the rise and recently joined the United Athletic Conference, which is a very competitive league. Like Marshall, the Governors have a passionate fan base, and I'm confident they will travel well to Huntington and have a positive economic impact on our community."

If anyone knows about Austin Peay's rise in football, it is Harrison, who watched the program's ascent while serving as the Vice President/Director of Athletics for the Governors from 2018-25 prior to accepting the same position at Marshall in July 2025.

Harrison acknowledged that the game will be special for him when the Governors visit Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

"There's also something personal about the opportunity to play Austin Peay, as they gave me my first opportunity to be an athletics director," Harrison said. "President Mike Licari is phenomenal and AD Jordan Harmon served as a Deputy AD during my time in Clarksville. The opportunity to welcome them to The Joan and to Marshall is truly a treat."

Austin Peay is a member of the United Athletic Conference, which was formed in 2023 as a football-only conference by merging the football-playing schools within the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Western Athletic Conference. The league competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

With Harrison at the helm, Austin Peay won the inaugural league title in the 2023 season.

Recently, the UAC expanded its footprint to include all sports, and Austin Peay will join the league as a full member, starting in 2026.

The contest serves as Marshall's first solidified non-conference game for the 2030 season.
