Marshall Softball Falls in Slugfest to Boston University

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Marshall Softball (9-8) could not hold an early advantage, falling 20-12 to Boston University in a run-rule shortened contest Sunday in Charlotte. Senior outfielder Bella Gerlach powered the Herd offense with two home runs and four RBI.
The Herd's bats erupted early, posting an eight-run 2nd inning punctuated by a three-run homer from Sydni Burko and a two-run shot by Diamond Leslie. Abby Darnley chipped in a two-run single and finished with two hits, while Gerlach homered in the first and sixth innings to pace the attack. Marshall jumped out to a 9-0 lead through its first two at-bats and stretched it to 10-3 after the 3rd.
Defensive struggles quickly turned the game, as Boston University came alive with a five-run 3rd before a decisive seven-run 4th. The Terriers' surge was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Megan Coyle, erasing the Herd's advantage and putting Marshall behind for good. Boston added another big frame in the sixth, capped by a bases-clearing triple to end the game via run rule.
The loss does not discount the weekend Marshall had, with wins over Boston U and Jacksonville, and two victories over a Charlotte team entering the weekend with wins over ranked Virginia Tech and Clemson squads.
